We love Haruki Murakami’s work (like iQ84, pictured above), but his undeniably surreal style can get our heads spinning a bit. His writing is deceptively simple, so it’s easy to be surprised at how imaginative his stories really are. As a Church Street customer once said as he waited for his hot chocolate: “Murakami would write that a man pulled into the coffee shop parking lot, walked inside, and ordered a coffee. But then you’d find out that the man was actually a cat, and the parking lot really existed on a magical plane to an alternate universe.” Ha! Sounds about right to us!
When you’re reading about whiskey, jazz, and magic cats, you need a snack to help you stay grounded in reality, and our Best Ever Bran Muffin is perfect. Loaded with good-for-you bran and blueberries, our bran muffin somehow manages to be delicious, even though it has zero butter or cane sugar. Because when your fiction has a healthy dash alienation, as Murakami’s generally does, you want to reach for comfort food. Plus, if you’re a runner like Murakami, you can’t go wrong with the energy and healthy grain and oil in the Best Ever Bran Muffin.
Catch up on Murakami with iQ84, or pre-order his newest book, Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage, the story of a man who reconnects with old friends to find out why they abandoned him. (See what we mean? Alienation!) That book is released August 12, and when you preorder through Church Street and Kobo, you’ll have the ebook as soon as it comes out — just in time to head to Church Street for breakfast of a Bran Muffin.
